Black Vulture Coragyps atratus L 25" (64 cm) W 57" (145 cm) In flight, shows
large white patches at base of primaries. Tail is shorter than Turkey
Vulture; Wings shorter and broader; legs white; feet usually to edge
of tail and beyond. Flight includes rapid flapping and short glides, usually
with wings flat. Gregarious and aggressive. Less efficient in finding
carrion, Black Vultures may claim Turkey
Vulture's find. Range: Common in open country and
near human settlements, where they scavenge in garbage dumps. |
